MULTAN: Federal Minister for Defence Production Abdul Qayyum Jatoi has said the Supreme Court will be moved for establishing Seraiki province.

Talking to journalists at the local airport on Saturday, the minister said the demand for Seraiki province was not political, but it had a humanitarian basis, adding south Punjab should have been granted the status of a province just after the creation of Pakistan.

‘We are consulting senior lawyers to move the Supreme Court for the establishment of Seraiki province as the people of south are still being denied the fruits of independence and deprived of the basic amenities,’ he said.
He said the people of south Punjab were denied justice as they could not travel to Lahore because of their meager resources.

He said a massive campaign would be launched for creating awareness among the people of south for establishment of Seraiki province. He said for the purpose seminars and conferences would be held in all southern districts. In this connection, he said, the first seminar would be held in Bahawalpur in August, second in Muzaffargarh and the third in Mianwali.

He announced that an all-Pakistan Seraiki conference would be held in Multan very soon and a charter of demands would be presented there.

Mr Jatoi said Multan would be the capital of the proposed Seraiki province which would comprise Bahawalpur, Khushab, Mianwali, Bhakkar, Layyah, Muzaffargarh, Rajanpur, Dera Ghazi Khan, Rahim Yar Khan, Bahawalnagar, Vihari, Lodhran, Khanewal, Jhang, Chiniot, Pakpattan, Sahiwal, Toba Tek Singh and Sargodha.

He alleged that former information minister Muhammad Ali Durrani was demanding restoration of Bahawalpur province at the behest of the establishment to sabotage the demand for a new province and divide Seraiki people on the issue.
